Ely sits on a clay island above the Fens. The streets around the cathedral and the waterside are Georgian and Victorian, with pipework patched for generations. The estates built north of the city since the 1990s have plastic pipework and underfloor heating.
Anglian Water supplies Ely, Littleport, Sutton, Haddenham and Witchford. Beyond the city the ground is peat, which shrinks in dry summers and drops away from buried pipes. That opens joints on long rural pipes, so water leak detection in Ely's villages often means walking a 200 metre pipe.

In a period house with no drawings, the thermal camera and a locator trace where the pipes really run before any listening or gas work starts, so nothing is opened on a guess.

Acoustic listening for the supply pipe, tracer gas for heating and underfloor loops. The leak is brought down to a hand-sized spot and marked on the floor ready for the repair.
Shows a warm heating pipe through a Victorian floor or a modern screed, and the fan of heat where it is leaking. Used on most underfloor heating jobs in Ely North.
The main tool for the long buried supply pipes serving houses and farms around Littleport and Sutton. The microphone is moved along the line until the leak is loudest.
A safe gas is put into a drained heating or underfloor loop and a detector finds where it comes up through the floor, so no tiles are lifted to find it.
In a Georgian house below the cathedral water was appearing at the bottom of a wall in the hall. The meter held still, the heating dropped on test, and the thermal camera traced a warm line under the stone floor to a pipe added generations ago. Tracer gas placed the leak under the hearth. On one of the newer estates north of the city an underfloor heating loop was losing pressure, found with gas at a single point under the kitchen screed. Out at Prickwillow a farmhouse on peat had a meter that never stopped and a long private supply pipe that had pulled apart at a joint as the ground shrank, traced in stages with the ground microphone.
From Ely we cover Littleport, Sutton, Haddenham, Witchford, Stretham, Little Downham and Prickwillow, and continue to Soham and Burwell on the same run across the Isle, most within 40 minutes of the city.
A trace and access claim pays for locating the leak and reinstating the floor or wall that was opened, as a separate item from the repair. Our Ely report records the tests, the thermal images and photographs, and the marked leak point, which insurers accept as proof the search was needed.
Tell us whether the meter or gauge is moving and we will book the next Ely slot.
