He asks about the meter, the boiler and what you have seen. Because sandy ground hides surface signs, a Brandon call often starts with a high bill rather than a wet patch, and that changes where he looks.
Leak detection in Brandon
Brandon sits on sand at the edge of Thetford Forest, which swallows leaking water without a trace on the surface. Charlie finds it anyway, with thermal imaging, a ground microphone and tracer gas.

Brandon's older streets are flint, the town's own stone, with cottages and terraces replumbed piecemeal. Most of the town, though, is post war housing and later estates on the sandy Breckland ground, on solid floors. Sand drains fast, so a supply pipe leak that would make a puddle on clay simply disappears here.
Anglian Water serves the town, with the usual split: their pipe to the boundary stop tap, your pipe from there to the house. Charlie has already done several jobs here. Brandon leak detection is familiar ground rather than a first visit.

The mains is isolated at the stop tap and the meter watched for movement, then the heating is tested under pressure. The one that loses water has the leak, and that sets the search area.

Thermal imaging maps the pipes in the floor or wall. The ground microphone or tracer gas then brings the leak down to a few inches. Charlie marks it and measures it in for the report.
Flint walls are thick and cold, so a heating pipe behind them shows as a sharp warm line and a leak as a spreading patch. On the estates the camera reads the pipes in the screed through carpet.
Sand is quieter than clay, so our engineer takes more readings along a Brandon supply pipe, closer together, until the leak noise peaks. The ground microphone works through lawn, gravel, tarmac and block paving.
The slab leak detection Brandon customers ask for, meaning a pipe under a concrete floor, is done by charging the pipe with a hydrogen and nitrogen mix. The gas finds its way up through sand or concrete above the leak.
A flint cottage in the old part of Brandon had a boiler that needed topping up every week and no damp anywhere, because the sand under the floor took the water away. Tracer gas through the heating came up at one spot in the hall. On one of the estates a house with a block paved drive had a meter that would not stop. Sand is quiet to listen through, so we took readings close together along the supply pipe and found the split just inside the gate. And in Mildenhall a shop had a wet floor in the stockroom, which the thermal camera traced to a hot water pipe leaking behind the back wall rather than under the floor.
Mildenhall is a few miles south, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket are the next towns along, and Thetford is across the border. Lakenheath, Elveden, Santon Downham and Weeting are covered from Brandon.
If your policy includes trace and access, the cost of locating the leak and reinstating floors, walls or ground afterwards is normally recoverable. Our report sets out the tests, the thermal and acoustic evidence, the marked and measured position and photographs, and tells the repairer exactly where to dig.
