Ring with the symptoms
Charlie asks about the age of the house, the floors and what you have seen. For a listed building he also asks what the floor coverings are, because the aim is to find the leak with nothing lifted.
Leak detection in Hingham
Hingham's Georgian brick houses hide their pipework well. Charlie traces hidden leaks through old floors and thick walls without taking either apart.

Hingham is small for a market town but the houses round the Market Place and the Fairland are large, Georgian and full of pipe runs added over two centuries. Fixing leaking pipes in Hingham starts with knowing which runs are live.
Beyond the centre the town has 1960s and later housing with solid floors, and Deopham, Great Ellingham and Morley have farmhouses on long private supply pipes. Anglian Water serves them all. A plumber in Hingham can mend a pipe once it is found; the finding is the specialist part.

Mains, heating and any underfloor circuit are tested separately. A gauge that falls or a meter that creeps tells him which one to chase, and in an old house that can rule out half the pipework in minutes.

The faulty circuit is followed with the camera, the microphone or tracer gas until the escape point is clear. Charlie marks it and shows you the evidence.
Thick Georgian walls hide pipes well but hold the heat they give off. Our engineer runs the heating and scans each wall and floor, and the warm trace of the pipe and the hot patch of the leak appear without touching the plaster.
A contact microphone on the pipework and a ground microphone on the floor pick up the sound of water escaping under pressure. Our engineer follows the signal to the loudest point.
Where a heating pipe runs under a brick or flagstone floor, the gas test finds it without lifting anything. The emptied circuit is charged with a hydrogen mix and the detector reads highest above the leak.
A Georgian house on the Market Place had plaster blowing at the foot of a thick wall, which the owners had blamed on rising damp for years. With the heating running the thermal camera picked up a warm pipe climbing inside the wall and a hot spot where it was leaking, so the repair was one small hole in a wall that could otherwise have been stripped. A farmhouse out towards Deopham had a meter that turned all night. The private supply ran across a paddock, and the ground microphone put the leak near an old field drain, a long way from the house. A 1960s bungalow had a heating pipe weeping in the solid floor, pinned with tracer gas.
Wymondham and Dereham have their own pages. Deopham, Great Ellingham, Attleborough, Morley and Hardingham are covered from Hingham on the same visit. The coast at Sheringham and the King's Lynn side at Dersingham are on the Norfolk county page.
A leak in a period house tends to mean a claim, because the floors and plaster it damages are expensive to put back. Trace and access cover pays for finding the leak and for reinstating what had to be opened. Our report sets out the tests, the method and the marked location with photographs.
