A few questions about the meter, the boiler pressure and where the damp is let Charlie plan the visit. If the meter turns with the taps off, the ground microphone comes to the front.
Leak detection in Aveley
Aveley is about 55 miles from Haverhill. Charlie traces water and heating leaks across Aveley, Belhus and Kenningtons with cameras, microphones and tracer gas, and marks the spot so the repair is one small hole.

Aveley is two places. The old village around the church and the High Street has brick cottages and interwar houses. Around it, the post war estates towards Belhus were built in quantity on solid floors, and the newer housing on the Purfleet side has heating pipes in screed from new. Each hides a leak differently.
Essex and Suffolk Water supplies Aveley. Their pipe stops at your boundary; the run from the stop tap across the front garden is yours. That pipe, and the heating circuit indoors, is where a leak detection Essex engineer comes in.

Thermal imaging picks out the heating runs under concrete and the cold spots where water is sitting. On a Belhus semi that usually points to one room before any other tool is needed.

Tracer gas or acoustic listening fixes the position to a few inches. Charlie marks the floor or the drive, photographs the spot and hands over the written report.
The camera reads the floor surface. Post war concrete floors in Aveley hold heat from the pipe beneath, so a healthy run shows as a crisp line and a leak as a bloom where warm water has spread into the slab.
A ground microphone on the drive or lawn hears the supply pipe leaking under pressure. Charlie moves it along the likely line and the loudest reading sits over the break.
For heating pipes in screed, the circuit is drained and charged with a hydrogen mix. The gas escapes at the hole and comes up through the floor, where the probe finds it.
Belhus is already on the books, along with Chadwell St Mary and Chafford Hundred East on the Grays side. Further along the A13 we have found leaks at Corringham and Fobbing, East Tilbury and Linford and West Tilbury. Thurrock is the far corner of the Essex patch for us, so there are fewer jobs here than around Chelmsford, but the same van and kit make the trip.
South Ockendon is next door and Grays, Purfleet and Chafford Hundred are a few minutes away. Charlie covers Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary on the same run, with Upminster and Rainham over the border in Greater London.
Finding a hidden leak and opening up to reach it is what trace and access cover pays for. The report Charlie writes gives the insurer the test results, the thermal images and the exact marked spot in one document.
