Decide which pipe
Taps off, meter watched. Then the boiler pressure. One of them gives the game away and Charlie knows whether he is working outside on the supply pipe or inside on the heating.
Leak detection in Tilbury
Tilbury is about 60 miles from Haverhill by road. Charlie traces water main, heating and underfloor leaks across the town, East Tilbury and West Tilbury with thermal imaging, acoustic listening and tracer gas.

Tilbury was built for the docks, and the terraces off Dock Road and Calcutta Road still carry pipework altered many times since. The council estates that followed sit on solid floors. Out at East Tilbury the Bata estate is a one off: 1930s flat roofed houses built by the shoe company.
Essex and Suffolk Water supplies all three Tilburys. The main and the pipe to your boundary are the company's; beyond the stop tap the supply pipe is yours. On the clay here a leak can run for months without breaking the surface, which is why every leak detection Essex visit of ours starts at the meter.

The camera goes over every floor and the walls that carry pipes. In a dock terrace the heating often runs under the boards and shows as warm lines; a cold patch where the line should be is the suspect.

The ground microphone or tracer gas settles the exact point. Charlie marks it, photographs it and writes up the method and the evidence for the plumber and the insurer.
Surface temperature gives away what is underneath. A heating pipe in a concrete floor shows as a warm line, a wet area shows cooler than its surroundings, and the camera reads both through tiles, carpet and plaster.
Supply pipes under Tilbury front yards and pavements are listened to from above. The ground microphone picks up the noise of water forcing out of a crack and the loudest reading marks the spot.
A hydrogen and nitrogen mix is pushed into a drained heating circuit. It gets out where the water was getting out, rises through the slab and is picked up by a detector on the floor.
East Tilbury and Linford and West Tilbury are both on the books, along with Corringham and Fobbing on the Stanford Le Hope side. Closer to Grays we have found leaks in Chadwell St Mary, Chafford Hundred East and Belhus. Thurrock is the furthest corner of Essex from Haverhill, so Charlie runs these jobs together.
Grays and Chadwell St Mary are next door, Stanford Le Hope and East Tilbury a few minutes along the river, and South Ockendon and Aveley up towards the M25. Basildon is the nearest larger town on the way back north.
Trace and access cover pays to find a hidden leak and to open up and make good. Charlie's report carries the thermal images, the readings and the exact marked position, written so an insurer can approve the claim from the document alone.
Call Charlie on 07897 020 680 with what you have seen and he will fit Tilbury into the next Thurrock run.
