Call with the readings
Charlie asks for the meter reading with the stop tap shut, or the boiler pressure after a day, plus the age of the house and the floor type. For a farm he asks how long the run from the meter is.

Charlie books Fakenham with Dereham, North Elmham and coast jobs. The town centre is Georgian and Victorian brick round the Market Place, with 20th century estates on the Norwich and Holt roads.
Round the town the villages are a mix of flint cottages, barn conversions and working farms, and plenty sit a long way from the main with a private supply pipe doing the last stretch. Anglian Water's meter at the boundary is often the only evidence that pipe is leaking.

Mains, heating and underfloor loops are isolated and tested one after another. Whichever will not hold is the one that gets traced.

The faulty circuit is followed with the thermal camera, the ground microphone or tracer gas until the leak point is certain. Charlie marks it and photographs it.
In a barn conversion with underfloor heating in a limecrete or screed floor, the camera shows every loop once the system is warm, and a leak shows as a hot bloom off the line. In the town houses it finds hidden pipes behind plaster.
A private supply pipe across a field or a long drive is found with the ground microphone. Our engineer listens at intervals along the route, and the hiss of escaping water gets louder as he nears the break.
When a heating pipe is buried in a solid floor and the camera cannot see enough, the circuit is drained and charged with a hydrogen and nitrogen mix. The detector finds where the gas comes up, through flagstones, tiles or concrete.
A Victorian terrace near the Market Place had a ceiling stain under the bathroom that kept coming back after it was painted. The thermal camera showed the bath waste running across the ceiling and a drip at one joint, which a plumber fixed in an hour. Out towards Burnham Market, a barn conversion on a long private supply had a meter that turned with everything off. We walked the route with the ground microphone and the hiss peaked under the gravel drive, well short of the house. And on one of the estates on the Holt side a 1970s semi had a warm patch in the hall: a heating pipe in the concrete floor, pinned with tracer gas.
Leak detection in Hempton, Sculthorpe, Tattersett, Stibbard, South Creake and Wells-next-the-Sea is covered from Fakenham on the same visit. Hunstanton, North Elmham and Cromer have their own pages. Watton and Breckland are on the Norfolk county page.
If water has damaged a floor or a wall, trace and access cover on your home policy pays for finding the leak and for putting the opening right. Our report gives the insurer the tests, the method used and photographs of the marked point. For a farm or holiday business, the same report serves a commercial policy.
Ring us on 07897 020 680 with the postcode and we will fit Fakenham into the next North Norfolk run.
